OUTSIDE THE BOX
Vegan dating
Thinking outside the meat-based box
… The way to a person’s heart is through their stomach – even if things don’t quite happen as you expect them to …
A friend of mine recently told me excitedly about a romance with a surprising twist – and it’s such a good story that I don’t want to just keep it to myself. Who knows, perhaps you’ve even experienced something similar?
So my friend starts telling her story:
The pictures and details on the dating site made every fiber of my being come alive. He was an architect with a sculpted body, sports mad, a good head of hair and “eating out” as one of his hobbies – which was enough to make me feel a great deal, including bold and daring.
A three-course candle-light dinner
I messaged him. He messaged me back. Things went on like this for a few days until, in the end, we met for a coffee for the first time. There was a spark, for both of us. We met up on several more evenings – evenings which were punctuated by a fair amount of strong alcohol, subtle flirtation and loving gazes. Even though we hadn’t kissed yet, I was absolutely head over heels for him. However, then his work got in the way of things, as he was away for two weeks.
That meant that a good three weeks passed before I finally invited him back to my place. I wanted to cook something really special. The romantic three-course menu of prawn cocktail, spaghetti Bolognese and a homemade cheesecake took me all afternoon to make, but after all, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, I thought.
Hobby: “vegan dining”
When he turned up on my doorstep at 8 pm with a smile, looking his best, and handed me a bouquet of roses with a sparkle in his eyes, I could no longer contain myself, and pulled him spontaneously onto the sofa. An extensive kissing session ensued, which lit a fire in us – but also made us very hungry.
When, however, I took off his blindfold in the candlelit dining room and he saw the lavishly set table, he raised his hand and started laughing out loud. I was so embarrassed that I went as red as a ripe tomato. What on earth had I done wrong? But just before I burst into tears, he pulled me towards him tenderly and took his cellphone out of his pocket. With a smile, he brought up his profile in the dating app and pointed to where his hobbies were listed: “eating out at vegan restaurants”.
At first, I kicked myself, and then I couldn’t help laughing too when I thought about how being so head over heels had made me overlook this small detail. How fortunate it was that our romance took such a wonderful, vegan turn… May this encourage all who wish to follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle!
In short: today, exactly 3 months later, it’s Valentine’s Day and I’m sitting in his kitchen … unable to believe that a three-course vegan menu can bring me almost as much happiness as my relationship to this dreamboat does. And yes, I still indulge in carnal desires – but I’m no longer a carnivore 😉
On that note, we’ll leave our two lovebirds in peace and let my friend enjoy all manner of pleasures! Happy vegan dating and happy Valentine’s Day to all of you!
