Vegan in the City – BERLIN

What’s life like for a vegan in the city? To answer that question, we’re starting a new mini-series for urban lifestyle fans. What can you find there, and where? What is IN and what are the latest trends? We kick off with Berlin. Join us on a trip across the pulsing capital city that makes vegan hearts skip a beat.

The vegan lifestyle’s capital city

Berlin is a vegan paradise: need to shop for plant-based food? No problem. Going out for vegan food? A cakewalk. And that’s not all: from vegan hairdressers and vegan fashion labels right through to vegan tattoo studios, nothing is off limits. And many a trend comes from the Spree, of course. There are lots of events and activities on offer for all those with an interest in upping their plant-based nutrition… vegan summer festivals, vegan camps, networking events and much more, many of these closely linked to events that focus on animal welfare.

And there are now helpful apps and platforms available to help you really indulge in everything on offer and get the lowdown on all the details. The site berlin-vegan.de, which also offers a map for all vegan needs, is an abundant source of information. And our cooperation partner Lorylist offers an overview of all the plant-based services in the city at the touch of a button.

Summer in the city

Maybe you’re like us, when we think of summer, we think of ice cream. Berlin boasts some of the best plant-based ice cream outlets around: countless ice cream parlours and cafés feature vegan treats in their ice cream assortment… from sorbet to the “really” creamy ones. There are also two purely vegan ice cream parlours (that we know of). The oldest of these is Balaram in Friedrichshain. Since 2016 it has been offering 15 different varieties you can decorate yourself at the free-topping counter. In Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg, ice cream indulgence awaits you at the local Tribeca Ice Cream outlet. The stylish store boasts organic ingredients, raw-food quality and superfoods.

From breakfast to cake – just sit in the café and munch on devilishly sweet vegan treats… you can do that on almost every corner in Berlin. Discover our three favourites:

  1. Vamos Veganos
  2. Velicious Café
  3. Cafe Neundrei

But then of course there’s Café Morgenrot, Schaumschläger, Pêle-Mêle, Haferkater (the first port of call for nutritious porridge – just like in some other cities), Vux and so much more. Sigh!

Berlin – the home of the (vegan) Döner

And if you’re craving something savoury after all the sweets, you don’t have to look far in the capital. Let’s kick of the culinary exploration with a Berlin institution: the Döner. And before you say, “Wait, but that’s meat!”, then you don’t know your plant-based cousins yet: the Fiöner (available at Vamos Veganos) or the Vöner on Boxhagenerstraße. Vegetarians and vegans can find more dishes here, but vegan kebabs are very popular these days. And you can find delicious vegan dishes in the form of other Levantine cuisine on almost every corner of Belin. Take for example Azzam in Neukölln’s falafel, tabbouleh, etc. or visit Al Pasha, which also has countless vegan offerings.
But of course, the capital’s vegan gastronomy has countless more purely vegan restaurants in store for you. Check it out:

The oldest and longest cult classic: Yoyo’s Foodworld

Once a sensation, today it is simply a classic: Yoyos is Berlin’s oldest purely vegan restaurant. Wait, Berlin’s?! It’s actually the oldest vegan restaurant in Germany, founded in 2008. You can find it near Boxhagener Platz. Founder Nihat Karayel: “I still have the images in my head of how guests ran away at the word vegan, but also how enthusiastic meat eaters brought their friends or family to us – as an exclusive shop.” It’s unique feature? The queue at the door! And the wait in this special self-service restaurant is worth it: vegan burgers, wraps (from Köfte to Bavarian wraps), alternatives to currywurst, schnitzel, pizza, etc. and of course, salads and snacks.”

10 favourite Berlin vegan restaurants:

We start with vegan restaurants in Berlin. And this is just a selection!

1) You like Thai? Then Li.ke Thai Vegan should probably be your first stop in Berlin. The first purely vegan Thai restaurant, Li.ke Thai Vegan has been enlivening the gastro scene near Boxhagener Platz since 2018 with colourful furnishings and vibrant aromas. A little trip to Thailand in the midst of the day-to-day!

2) People in Berlin are usually friendly anyway. But it doesn’t get any more vegan-friendly than Froindlichst in Prenzlauer Berg. It serves quality, plant-based comfort food: bowls, pizza and burger creations, mezze, taco and street food platters. The Stracciatella cake beckons to us from the dessert menu.

3) Fancy a Temura Tiger or an Angry Samurai? The Secret Garden on Warschauer Straße, Berlin’s first vegan sushi restaurant, has been serving these up since 2019. By the way, if you order an “Angry Samurai”, you’ll get a delicious platter of plucked soy strips, mango, avocado, Asian coleslaw and black rice.

4) Zero waste meets vegan: FREA – Berlin’s first waste-conscious restaurant. David and Jasmin and their Norwegian chef launched this venture with a consistent focus on sustainability: zero plastic and seasonal and regional products. But of course they also care about taste, hence their motto: full taste, zero waste. And the crunchy vegetable-centric dishes have it all. Since everything is so fresh, they limit themselves to three starters and three main courses or even one set meal. And why not top it all off with a delicious black rice cheesecake, right? And the highlight? The in-house composting machine!

5) Head to Lia’s Kitchen on Kollwitzstraße for exceptional homemade burgers. Whether quinoa lentil, chilli bean or smoky BBQ mushroom, Lia’s burgers are creations are packed with love as they are good quality. Would you like sweet potato fries and salt with that? And… the icing on the cake, even the mayo, ketchup and hot sauce are vegan and there is as much of it as you want.

6) In the mood for something Vietnamese? Maybe something fresh and naturally vegan… without any flavour enhancers? Then head over to Hum vegan in Prenzlauer Berg. The family-run restaurant has been impressing since 2016 with fresh dishes, using regional and seasonal vegetables and fruit wherever possible, cleverly veganising traditional Vietnamese recipes in the process.

7) And, on the subject of exotic-Asian cuisine… Vegan or vegetarian Chinese food is somewhat of a rarity, But, of course, Berlin’s got just the thing: Tianfuzius on Regensburger Straße. The owner, Wen Wang, comes from a family of restaurateurs and opened Tianfuzius in 2015. With the exception of the wontons and spring rolls, she only serves meat-free dishes. Some dishes are with egg, so are only vegetarian, but there’s a rich selection for vegan fans, too. From water spinach on glass noodles and smoked duck-style Wuxiang tofu to HongYouJiaoZi in hot chilli oil sauce.

8) Vegan fine dining and a sophisticated, atmospherically lit bar awaits you at Kopps, Berlin-Mitte. Chef de cuisine Zita Sándor’s refined dinner menus showcase vegetables in a deliciously new way, a real discovery for the discerning taste and budget. The weekend brunch is particularly popular.

9) At Lucky Leek, Kollwitzstraße, you can enjoy a touch of class with asparagus ceviche, then some braised chicory, working your way up to sesame tofu on shiitake sticky rice rolls with pineapple, before finishing in style with poppy seed strudel and tangerine ice cream. Lucky Leek refers to its menu and à la carte offerings as natural fine dining.

10) Let’s finish with something a little more down to earth with the endless burger variety on offer at Neue Republik Reger. How about a Magic Mushroom Burger? And what does an Angry Crowd Burger look like when it’s at home?

And worth mentioning here on the subject of acting and sustainability is the “Green Actors Lounge” by Kerstin Schilly. It is dedicated to “green” film production, sustainable lifestyle and social issues.

Vegan food shopping

These days you can find vegan products on all supermarket shelves. In addition to this, particularly in Berlin, there’s also for instance purely vegan bakeries like C+ Bakery on Falckensteinstraße, The Sanctuary or Round & Edgy. Worth mentioning too when it comes to classic Berlin are the Dr. Pogo vegan shop and Teto Tofu on Saturdays at the weekly market at Boxhagener Platz.

Everything but animal-based – first vegan REWE store

2024 has seen yet another innovation on the vegan shopping scene: REWE opened its first purely plant-based store in the trendy Berlin district of Friedrichshain in the spring. Fittingly named “REWE fully plant-based”, it claims to stock more than 2,700 products. Even the staff are said to have been specially trained for vegan shopping needs. Dennis Henkelmann, the store manager, is justifiably proud of the range on offer in the store. If you’re in search of a purely vegan product range, you will of course find it at: velivery.com

Vegan from head to toe

With the extensive variety of plant-based delicacies on offer, veganism is far from being a flash in the pan in Berlin. You’ll find vegan hairdressers and beauty salons, a vegan tattoo shop on Erich-Weinert-Straße as well as vegan clothing and shoes. Speaking of which, we discovered some chic vegan sneakers at Wertvoll on Marienburger Straße. One very special treasure trove for all things sustainable, vegan and beautiful is DearGoods which, admittedly, you’ll also find in several locations across Bavaria.
For the latest hairstyle, you can go to the Weinhönig hair studio on Kopenhagenerstraße or to Matthias from MAT MY DAY, who describes himself as an organic hairdresser. So you can step out beautifully dressed and beautified from head to toe on a animal-friendly shopping spree across Berlin.

The city’s first plant-based canteen

And before we know it… we’re hungry again. It also occurs to us that it is young people in particular who are switching to veganism in their droves. Naturally, this is having an impact on the food on offer at universities, too. In 2019, Berlin got its first purely vegan canteen in Veggie 2.0, located in the TU Berlin, Hardenbergstraßees. Head along and feast on plant-based food on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students can choose from any of the six main courses to be provided. On taking a look at the current menu, we were delighted to see dishes like Moroccan One Pot with barley and figs, Thai tomato soup and homemade pasta with vegan Bolognese. In addition, a salad buffet, a variety of side dishes and, of course, desserts await the students. How about a pistachio pudding to finish?

I think we can all agree: Berlin is excitingly diverse, colourful and vegan from breakfast to dessert, from head to toe! So hopefully our Vegan in the City launch article has shown you that you too can live a wonderfully vegan lifestyle – at least in Berlin! One for all tastes, professions and requirements. From canteens to fine dining or the odd ice cream in between: it’s got it all! Want to share your own vegan favourites in the city with us?

Either way, have a great time if you live in Berlin or, if not, on your next visit to this exciting, trendy city!
